In November, I moved into Hawaii. I will be returning to Alaska summers, and we plan to play a couple of places while I am there. In the meantime, I am playing in Hawaii. Sean, Daniel and who knows who else may be appearing hear with me. Hawaii fits my easygoing music, and I fit right in here. So hopefully we will be seeing you in Alaska soon or maybe here in Hawaii even sooner. Aloha!
Welcome! thanks for visiting.
The No Wake Band which started out as Pat & Sean continues, but plans have changed with the virus fiasco. Pat Wake who has been living in Hawaii through the winter, is still in Hawaii, and Sean is working and is still on the north slope of Alaska. The plan was to be playing music in the places they usually played, do a couple of canoe trips, catch some fish, and so on. That is still the plan, but nobody knows when yet. In the meantime, Pat will be playing with the Lucky Lizards around the Island of Hawaii. There is a story behind Pat Wake and the Lucky Lizards, and it was worth telling.
In 2018, Pat and his wife Judy had arrangements to stay at Camp Kilauea for vacation on the big island, Hawaii and arrived right when Kilauea the volcano started erupting. Camp Kilauea is on top of the volcano and was evacuating right when they arrived. Everyone was pretty shook up. They had multiple earthquakes that day, and all over the island everybody felt them. Pat asked the staff for suggestions because they had heard all of hotels in Hilo were full. They had no idea. Pat said, “Let’s go to Naalehu, get something to eat, and see if we can find a bed breakfast. There was a band setting up to play there , and one of the band members overheard Pat speak of their hotel closing and that they were in need of lodging. Her name was Colleen and she asked her husband if he would be ok with her inviting Pat and Judy to come and stay with them. They wound up staying two nights with them and became friends. They didn’t know at the time Pat played in a band as well.
Back in Alaska, Pat and Judy’s home was a cabin and the Matanuska River was eating away at its banks heading their way, so they had to move. Neither Pat or Judy were thinking about moving to Hawaii. Colleen’s day job was a real estate appraiser, and she was showing Judy houses she was working on and the prices. Comparable with Alaska, Judy said “I would like to do this”. Pat had been praying for guidance since he knew he had to move, and neither of them were drawn to anything or anywhere. The day after they returned to Alaska, they received an unsolicited offer from someone who wanted to buy their home. That seemed like guidance. Long story short, two years later they moved.
Pali, Colleen’s husband, and Pat hit it off as friends, discussed their bands, and before Pat and Judy left, Pali gave Pat a Lucky Lizards T-shirt and Pat gave Pali one of his “Wind in my Sail CDs. They never jammed. Two years later when Pat and Judy moved to Hawaii, Pali offered Pat to come and play as a guest at the Lucky Lizard events, playing as a solo musician during their breaks. That went well, but then came the pandemic shutdown, and everything stopped. Tony, another member of the Lucky Lizards lives just down the hill from Pat and they started jamming, learning each other’s material. Soon, Solomon, the lead guitarist for the Lucky Lizards joined in, then Pali. Pali and Colleen.
Hopefully we are on the other side of the virus shutdown. Pali just announced the first gig for the Lucky Lizards since the lockdown and invited Pat and play as part of the Lucky Lizards. So Pat will be playing with the Lucky Lizards while he is in Hawaii and with the No Wake Band in Alaska and Hawaii when they are able. He likes the best of both worlds. It is unclear now whether Sean will come to Hawaii before Pat makes back to Alaska. Either way, it is good with them. Sean enjoys his job on the slope, which is kind of a take it while you can get it job. He is riding a wave while it lasts.
